3. INTRODUCTORY CLASS

Most topics have a power point, usually with a practical exercise, and related readings, plus additional resource material.

READINGS FOR INTRODUCTION:

The course is built around two texts by Viv Grigg, Companion to the Poor and Cry of the Urban Poor.  These are included on the CD. These are supplemented by other readings. The chapters for the introduction are:
NEVER THE SAME AGAIN
CITY OF CONTRASTS

ACROSS THE DEATH LINE

Topics Set by Trainees: The topics are set out in a logical teaching sequence, but usually the best teaching responds to the issues that people are asking, so as a trainer you need to choose week by week.  There was a brilliant educationalist who worked a lot with the poor in Brazil, called Paulo Freire, who popularised the idea of working from the practical issues of the poor.  Jesus, the master trainer knew that.

Build from Trainees Stories: Jesus also used stories.  The pattern of teaching these topics is to give a brief introduction to the topic, then get stories from the workers, then integrate what they have learned with information available here from other cities.

Action - Reflection: Jesus also taught that the one who obeys is the one who will know him.  These modules are based on action-reflection.  Out of the stories of action, come the questions that motivate learning.

Objective of Introduction:
1. Organizational: To familiarize each worker with the goals, methodology, measurement of outcomes and personnel in the course
2. Motivational: To motivate with the history of God's works, and vision for what God can do among the urban poor.
